The SJR is a size-independent prestige indicator that ranks journals by their 'average prestige per article'. It is based on the idea that 'all citations are not created equal'. SJR is a measure of scientific influence of journals that accounts for both the number of citations received by a journal and the importance or prestige of the journals where such citations come from It measures the scientific influence of the average article in a journal, it expresses how central to the global scientific discussion an average article of the journal is.

Total Documents

Evolution of the number of published documents. All types of documents are considered, including citable and non citable documents.

Citations per document

This indicator counts the number of citations received by documents from a journal and divides them by the total number of documents published in that journal. The chart shows the evolution of the average number of times documents published in a journal in the past two, three and four years have been cited in the current year. The two years line is equivalent to journal impact factor ™ (Thomson Reuters) metric.

Not every article in a journal is considered primary research and therefore "citable", this chart shows the ratio of a journal's articles including substantial research (research articles, conference papers and reviews) in three year windows vs. those documents other than research articles, reviews and conference papers.

Metrics based on Scopus® data as of April 2023

As an expert in the field of academic journal metrics and scholarly publishing, I bring forth a wealth of knowledge to shed light on the intricacies of the SCImago Journal Rank (SJR) and related concepts. My expertise is grounded in a thorough understanding of the dynamics of scientific influence, citation analysis, and the evolution of academic journals over time.

The SCImago Journal Rank (SJR) is a robust and size-independent prestige indicator designed to evaluate and rank academic journals based on their "average prestige per article." This metric is particularly noteworthy because it recognizes that all citations are not created equal. It takes into account not only the number of citations received by a journal but also the importance or prestige of the journals from which these citations originate.

The SJR is a powerful tool for gauging the scientific influence of journals, providing insights into the centrality of an average article within a journal to the global scientific discussion. This is crucial for researchers, institutions, and policymakers aiming to assess the impact and significance of scholarly publications.

Let's delve into the key concepts and data presented in the article:

  1. SJR Trends Over the Years:

    • The SJR values for each year from 1999 to 2022 are provided, reflecting the changing prestige and influence of the journals over time.
  2. Total Documents Evolution:

    • The chart depicts the evolution of the number of published documents, including citable and non-citable documents, from 1999 to 2022.
  3. Citations per Document:

    • This indicator reveals the average number of citations received by documents from a journal, divided by the total number of documents published. The data is presented for different time spans: 2 years, 3 years, and 4 years.
  4. Total Cites and Self-Cites:

    • The total number of citations and self-citations received by a journal's published documents over the past three years are tracked, shedding light on the journal's impact and self-referential tendencies.
  5. External Cites per Document:

    • This metric shows the evolution of the number of total citations per document and external citations per document. External citations are calculated by subtracting self-citations from the total number of citations, providing insights into a journal's influence beyond its own publications.
  6. % International Collaboration:

    • This ratio reflects the extent of international collaboration in a journal, indicating the percentage of documents signed by researchers from more than one country.
  7. Citable and Non-Citable Documents:

    • The ratio of citable documents (research articles, conference papers, and reviews) to non-citable documents is presented over different years, highlighting the journal's focus on substantial research.
  8. Cited and Uncited Documents:

    • The ratio of cited documents to uncited documents is tracked, offering insights into the impact and visibility of a journal's content.

These metrics collectively provide a comprehensive understanding of a journal's scholarly impact, collaboration patterns, and publishing trends over time. Researchers and stakeholders can utilize this information to make informed decisions about where to publish, which journals to follow, and how to gauge the influence of scientific articles.
